Cultivating civility: techniques for having healthy, productive conversations in uncivil times

July 25, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 am PDT

Free

It seems that we’re hearing “calls for civility” more frequently these days. But, what does that mean and how can we be more civil? In this session we’ll review some seeds of incivility that include our internal assumptions and impulsive interpersonal exchanges. We’ll discuss approaches to listening that lead to understanding (not necessarily agreement), and examine techniques and strategies for having respectful and productive conversations—especially with others whose views and life experiences differ from our own.

Through role plays and candid interchanges participants will engage with others on a level that does not overlook differences nor resolve issues of concern, but shifts the way those issues are talked about. We’ll practice ways of speaking, listening, and asking questions that diffuse tension, foster sincere curiosity and open up conversations.
